This is the first step on the Beginner's Path, and it provides you with a RS profile with which you will be able to complete the rest of the Path. After you complete and submit the RS join form, you will receive an email from our site asking you to confirm your email address. Go to the link in the email to activate your RS profile.

As an online club, email is one of our most important methods of communication. If we can’t get in touch with you, we can’t help you. De-spam the RS email addresses of the Academy CO and your Primary Instructor, to begin with. You can let us know that you have done this by replying to the initial emails that they will be sending out. After you get into a division, you will need to check the spam box a few times until you are sure that you are getting all the emails that you are supposed to be getting.

This proposal is intended to teach new members to use our site, and give them something specific to do immediately.  This is designed to keep more people interested in our club after they have joined.  As part of the Beginner's Path, new members will be asked to do a variety of things that will get them started on their RS career. They will also be rewarded with a medal and a promotion, if they have not earned that promotion by any other way, each time they reach a certain mark in the Path.  The clear goals and rewards should make this system effective both at creating activity and teaching new members about the RS.

Xfire is a gaming instant messenger system. Even if you do not intend to play multiplayer games with other RSers, it is still useful to have as a form of instant messaging with RSers who are not found on IRC. For more information, visit the RS wiki page on Xfire. Add username "spokes", VA Tyrell "Spokes" Borran, to your friends list and when he receives the request, he will award this point.

If passed, this proposal will be put into effect as soon as the Internet Office can code the system.  A notice about the proposal will be sent to the entire club once it is activated.  Estimated time to code after approving is one week.

<pre>Beginner's Path - A rather coding-intense project that gives someone who's

just signed up a very specific list of things to do in order to earn his

or her first promotion. I'm sure I fired off an email or five about this

to various people, and I even started working on it once, but basically,

you get promoted to LJG (or whatever) if you:

- Edit profile

- Sign up for the forums

- Make one forum post

- Send one email using rs.org

- Find the pages listing honorary members (two pages - one for those with

the medal, one for those with the roster status) (exercise in using site,

also a bit of a history lesson)

- whatever else you might care to add

This gives people something to do right at the beginning, there is

absolutely no dead time, you click the "Join!" button, and there's a big

"Welcome!" page, and a big "Next Step -->" link.  This should really cut

down on lost members; it's easy, you get rewarded for it, you learn how to

work the site, and you build a connection with the site.  The main reason

I haven't done it yet is the amount of coding involved.  Snap and I have

discussed this, and I'll bet you it could be all done within 4-6 hours of

coding, but I haven't done it yet. Also, the specific details, like what

exactly the steps are and OKing a change in the bylaws to allow promotion

to LJG, haven't been finalized.

What is the Beginner's Path?

It is a list of tasks for new members to undertake that familiarizes them with the Rebel Squadrons and its website. It is available to anyone of a rank under Captain, which is all Cadets and Lieutenants. Once you have reached Captain, you are not considered a "beginner" anymore, and the path becomes unavailable.

The Path is divided into five categories: Basics, Communication, Education, Other, and Advanced. There are 30 possible points on the path, and earning points yields rewards in the following manner:

   * 10 points: "Beginner's Path Ribbon" and promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade
   * 20 points: "Beginner's Path Honors Ribbon" and promotion to 2nd Lieutenant
   * 30 points: "Beginner's Path Master's Ribbon", for high-achieving members

A description of each of the tasks on the Path follows.

Set up an Orientation Chat with your PI 1 point. Admin approval required: CMDR Tá'Ré Djo. Your Primary Instructor is going to be your “buddy” for a while, teaching you how to do things and showing you the ropes. Having a history and a way to act "in character" will make your Rebel Squadrons experience much more enjoyable.
