Game information - New levels

Jump to navigationJump to search

New missions and levels are something that the RS has thrived on for many years, especially in the flying sections.

No one site collects every custom mission, so we could do so and be a leader. An effort has already been made to do this with X-Wing custom missions.

It's easy to find missions/levels - just head over to Google and use your best internet-scouring skills. Once you have found them, there are a number of things you can do with it, each a level up from the previous:

  • Link to the mission(s) or page that it was found on
  • Note how many levels are included in the zip file
  • Note the titles, author, and other information of the files
  • Actually copy the briefings of missions, and other standard information (e.g. what Licah has done for each mission in the X-Wing missions database - click any tour, then any mission)
  • Actually play the mission/level yourself, note key features, and review it using any method you like
  • Take screenshots of notable components of the mission/level

It's obvious that the higher level you get, the more time-consuming it is, but for organization's sake it would be great if you could at least note the information of each file (e.g. how many missions in the zip) that you find.

Copyright

The tricky issue here is copyright: can we host whichever missions we want? Some say that LucasArts ultimately holds the copyright to everything, so we can just take any custom levels made for its games. However, this is a rather hostile move, so please make every effort to contact the original designer of the levels to ask if we can host them. If they say no, then we will simply link to a page that they are found on, but take screenshots and reviews like it's hosted on our site. Likely, hardly any missionmakers will say no, except for the Emperor's Hammer. They are a special case, and in any case their mission database is extremely well organized so it's not important at this time to collect their missions.

New Level Agreement

In case this is helpful to you. From http://io.rebelsquadrons.org/policies.

In order to have fun and continue the life of Lucas Arts games in the Rebel Squadrons, many times RS sub-sections will distribute edited version of Lucas Arts gaming components (usually levels). According to the Lucas Arts Licence Agreements such modification are perfectly legal under the following conditions [reprinted from Jedi Knight/Mysteries of Sith Manual]:

Rules Governing New Levels:

"New Levels" are data that modify, add to, or substitute for data in the Software, thus modifying, adding to, or replacing levels provided by LucasArts Entertainment Company, LLC (LEC) in the Software. New Levels may be permitted by LEC, in its sole discretion, on the following conditions. You agree that the following conditions apply to your creation of any New Levels:

  1. New Levels must work only with the retail version of the Software, and may not work with any demo or OEM versions of the Software.
  2. New Levels may not modify COM, EXE, DLL or other executable files.
  3. New Levels must not contain any illegal, scandalous, illicit, defamatory, libelous, or objectionable material (as may be determined by LEC in its sole discretion), or any material that infringes any trademarks, copyrights, protected works, publicity, proprietary, or other rights of any third party or of LEC.
  4. New Levels may not include any LEC sound effects or music files or portions thereof.
  5. 6. New Levels may not be sold, bartered, or distributed with any other product for which any charge is made (other than incidental charges for time spent online), but rather must be distributed free of charge.
  7. By distributing or permitting the distribution of any New Levels, all creators or owners of any trademark, copyright, or other right, title or interest therein grant to LEC an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free, sublicensable right to distribute the New Level by any means (whether now known or hereafter invented) derivative works thereof, and to charge for the distribution of such New Level or derivative work, with no obligation to account to any of the creators or owners of the New Level in any manner."
