The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer is a mile-long heavy cruiser developed by Kuat Drive Yards in order to spearhead the Galactic Empire's military might. Forming the core of the Imperial navy at its height; the over 25,000 starships developed of this class instilled fear and order into the hearts of the Empire's citizens. With an armament bristling with some of the most advanced weapons ever created, the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer is perhaps the greatest singular threat to the New Republic.

    Development

The history of the venerable Imperial Star Destroyer reaches back to the Rendili Star Drive Victory I-class Star Destroyer. Possessing a unique wedge shaped design the Victory I-class Star Destroyer; while maintaining a meager laser arsenal, was able to bring the brunt of its weapon systems to bear upon an enemy craft. This tactical advantage was thought to be a marvel of engineering, as a ship of inferior overall firepower was easily overpowering and destroying more hearty vessels; though it was not pursued further. Later a woman by the name of Lira Wessex, the wife of Denn Wessex (one of the first regional governors), combined elements of the Victory-I Class Star Destroyer and Acclamator-class Star Cruiser to propose the Imperator-class Star Destroyer. A ferocious debate between the Imperial Navy, Imperial Military Oversight Commission, and the long-disbanded Senate Budgetary Committee speared the proposal. Thinking the design was too unwieldy, too expensive, and an engineering impossibility; the Budgetary Committee and Oversight Commission fought vehemently against the design's implementation. Ultimately, through a combination of political pressure, bribes, and a series of unfortunate accidents, the dissenters were brought into line with the Navy's cravings. The Navy's yearn for the vessel would prove to be fruitful; for when the first Imperator Star Destroyer, only fifty million credits over budget, rolled off the production lines their hopes and dreams were brought to fruition in the form of this awesome starship. Soon after the Great Jedi Purge, the design class was officially renamed to the Imperial-class, signifying the strength of Imperial might. By the Emperor's command, these vessels were constructed so rapidly that safety precautions became non-existent; it is said that for every thousand men involved in the construction of a single Star Destroyer, forty to fifty of them will not live to see its completion.

    Operational history

The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer's design is one that has evolved with time and the battles it has seen. When first designed, the Kuat Drive Yards ISD-72x Shield Generators were located in protective domes atop the command tower. It was originally thought that the overlapping shields and focus on command tower protection would inclusively encompass the generators themselves. In battle, however, it was found that concentrated enemy fire could easily penetrate the shielding and inflict damage directly upon the shield generators. This weakness was exploited by the New Republic in dozens of combat situations until the loss of the Imperial-I Class Star Destroyer Kotiate. Thousands of Imperial Star Destroyers were recalled to Imperial shipyards to replace internal cargo space with their shield generators, effectively nullifying the weakness. This had the effect of lowering the Destroyer's cargo capacity by 4,000 Metric Tons, but it was considered a small price to pay for the added protection. The domes were replaced with additional sensor relays in order to fool Rebel pilots into continuing to attack what they believed were shield generator domes, wasting their firepower against mundane targets. Some ISDs still exist with their shield generators contained atop their command tower; but the number of these vessels is rapidly diminishing with either their inevitable destruction or refit. Other modifications to notable Star Destroyers include:

The Accuser, which sacrificed firepower and armor for improved sublight engines.

The Judicator, which was outfitted with improved targeting sensors inclusive of antenna locking, in-line calibration and helical-motion extrapolators.

The Singularity, which featured an improved hyperdrive, improved targeting systems for all weapons, and a stygian-triprismatic polymer to improve sensor stealth.

The Stalker, which featured improved armor at the expense of cargo capacity.

The Thunderflare, which featured a slower hyperdrive in exchange for more powerful weapons and shields.

The Vengeance, which converted its entire cargo area into a starfighter hangar, increasing its flight capacity dramatically.

The Visage, which was refitted with additional armor plating to chart unknown expanses in the Outer Rim.

With the decline of the Empire, and the serious reduction of the Imperial Star Destroyer fleet, these modifications are becoming more and more prevalent. It is almost an assured fact that no two Star Destroyers are alike.

    Current status

Currently, the Imperial Star Destroyer remains as the premier threat to the New Republic. These singular vessels are capable (under the right command) of decimating entire fleets without hesitation. New Republic designs such as the MC80B Star Cruiser can not hope to match the firepower of a singular Imperial-class Destroyer without heavy reinforcements. Lately, these vessels operate in small battle groups consisting of one Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, a Victory I or Victory II Star Destroyer, two Nebulon-B class escort frigates, and an assortment of smaller support craft. Operating in this manner, the Imperial Star Destroyer has the capability of bringing its full armament to bear upon its prow arc; allowing the escorting craft to guard the aft, port, and starboard sides of this gargantuan destroyer. Standard New Republic tactics to destroy Imperial I-class Star Destroyers that have been refitted with internal shield generators do not exist. Even assaulting Imperial I-class Star Destroyers with multiple flights of starfighters can prove to be fruitless; as some have been equipped with advanced anti-warhead defensive systems consisting of autoblaster emplacements and electronic countermeasures. Only the most skilled Republic tactician could hope to design a battle plan to fell even one of these craft.

    Behind the scenes

Note that after heavy logistical discussion the Rebel Squadrons's version of the Imperial I and Imperial II Star Destroyers disagree with the proposed designs given by Doctor Saxton and adhere more to the Star Wars D6, and Essential Guide 'variants'.
