Initial genre

Jump to navigationJump to search

Summary

New members can currently sign up for as many games as they like. This proposal would limit them to an initial genre (or, alternatively, an initial game), so that they would only have to deal with one thing at once. Combined with Beginner's Path, this will give them a clear sense of direction and belonging. A corollary is to limit the number of "academies" that one can be in at any given time to one. If one is in an academy, and wishes to join another fleet, he or she must either graduate the current academy or leave it for the other one.

Change to the join form

Instead of check boxes radio buttons will be provided.

"Genre" version

Sign up for one of the following:

  • Flight sims
  • FPS
  • RTS
  • SWG
  • Fiction writing
  • D6 roleplaying

"Game" version

  • Every game will have a radio button, so that someone must sign up for a specific game. Like we have now, except check boxes turn into radio buttons.

Academies

Every fleet should have an "academy", defined however the fleet wishes. The academy is defined as the specific method by which a cadet can reach both LJG and 2LT.

Opposition

  • This will decrease the number of new members signing up for each individual game.
Response: This should be made up for by increased activity from everyone who does sign up.

Notes

  • Also consider Beginner's Path - these two proposals can work together.
  • This proposal still requires extensive work in merging with Primary instructors to ensure that the new member's first instructor is active and willing to help.
