RSA Courses

Jump to navigationJump to search

For courses already in use, please see Academy courses. This article is for courses in preparation and the unfinished courses system in general.

Academy Courses will be held within a Training Departement and led by the given instructor. Post-graduate courses should be set up into 'course series', where it is not possible to take a higher level course without completing the lower level course in that given matter. Other requirements for taking a student into a course might be applied as well. Course series may include 2 - 5 levels. If more levels would be needed for a certain course series, it shall be discussed if it wouldn't be possible to split it up into two course series(/skills). A higher level course in a course series should take the student more time and be more challenging than the lower level course.
Especially in MP game issues, course series won't be expected to 'produce' Top Aces. In fictional terms, the RSA is here to provide the necessary knowledge to new officers, so they will be able to do their job properly. But combat experience itself and top ace status will have to be earned through real battles. The course series (for game issues) should aim to provide general knowledge of the in-game issues and to get a student's playing skills to at least an average level. Top Ace courses/course series might be implemented later on as well, but for the time being focus should be to set up the TDs and their appropriate basic courses.

Courses system

  • For suggestions or questions, please use the Talk page

  • Each course on the course list will have
    • a course guide (course introduction + some to all notes on the course)
    • a course exam
    • an assigned Course instructor

  • There will be courses
    • With roster representation
    • Without roster representation

Sign ups

  • Discussed at Talk page.

Graduations

  • Discussed at Talk page.

  • Upon graduation, the graduated student receives the course associated skill rank.

Course guides

  • The introduction in the guide (=1st guide page) for each course should include:
    • set of goals the course teaches
    • requirements a student needs to have completed prior being able to take the course (eg. other completed courses/skill ranks, rank, ITOD missions, ...)
    • how the student can sign up for the course and/or a general summary of what is going to happen during through the courses
    • the course associated skill
  • The reference section in the guide (=page 2+) for each course should include either:
    • complete reference for the course (eg. if the exam is a question/answer one, all answers should be possible to be found in the guide), and/or
    • help reference for the course asssociated issues

Exams

  • The exam section of each listed course should include either:
    • the actual exam, or
    • a summary of the exam requirements, and info on how the exam takes place

  • Exams can be:
    • in progressiv form. Eg. for a basic EaW SP course, the student would complete the 1st part (=1st mission) and then continue with the 2nd part after the instructor approves the 1st part, etc.
    • online in real time
      • eg. higher MP courses, eventual OTS courses and eventual basic MP courses
    • in the form of an online test form
      • knowledge courses
    • combination of above

Courses with roster representation

  • Courses that will have roster representation are:
    • UG courses
    • game SP/MP courses
    • OTS courses
    • Mission building courses
    • Fiction (?)
    • IT (?) -probably for higher level courses

  • Most courses will have a squad roster representation in the RSA, with the appropriate instructor as CO. Reasons for why to keep students in appropriate course squads are:
    • game SP courses will have fiction storylines associated to them. These stories and associated narratives will be revealed to a student one by one (through the student's progress) in order to prevent spoiling of the story.
    • game MP courses will be mostly based on 'training sessions', and available student positions will be limited
    • OTS courses will be partialy based on trainig sessions, and training material will be made available during student's progress

Courses without roster representation

These courses won't need any roster associated to them. Students go straight to the exam page and either fill out an exam form, or contact the appropriate instructor with the completed requirements.

  • Fiction knowledge courses
    • Starfighters, capital ships - to be merged into something like a "SW starship knowledge" skill

Post-graduate courses in preparation

Academy courses are things that are designed to teach you something new, or let you demonstrate your proficiency if you already know the material. Each course will have the following:

  • a stated set of goals that the course teaches
  • a reference guide (sort of a textbook if you prefer to call it that) with all the information you need to know for the course
  • a final test to show you've learned the material (or already know it)
  • an instructor that grades the tests and can help with any questions

If you want to help out, either place your name next to an existing course, or add a new course.

NOTE:

  • Course graduation awards will be taken care of in the Skills system.

All MB courses can be passed with or without merit.

Proposed Post-graduate Courses

A proposal for a new course should include:

  • a stated set of goals that the course teaches
  • a description of the learning part and the final test/goal (which would be both set up/implemented after the course gets approved)
  • an instructor willing to work out the course and work as instructor for it after the course gets implemented

Gaming courses

Star Wars courses

Website courses

In recommended order:

XHTML/CSS could be taught both at once, and HTML ignored, but the person would then be less equipped to deal with old-style HTML. Plus, regular HTML might be simpler to learn, and probably more people still know it better than XHTML.

Excerpt from Licah's email to High Command:

Other academy courses - Well, this is like the DB's Shadow Academy or the
EH's IWATS. I don't know if you know these, but they're basically
awesome, though annoying too. It's basically a test, during which you try
to find all the answers you can in the reference material that accompanies
it. Topics can be all over the map, though they should be RS-related, but
they can include things like Differences in Rebel Starfighters in the
SW:EU, Tactics for Attacking Capital Ships in XvT, AIM Basics #1, Advanced
Website Design, Basic Leadership.. you name it. You learn (well,
presumably, although not as well as other methods of learning), you can do
these any time, and then you can brag about having completed the course,
with 100% grade or whatever. The issues here are making courses that are
challenging, informative, and above all, FUN. The reference guide has to
be top-rate, too. Some of those EH or DB tests suck. So, you need people
that are excellent at refining such tests to meet all the good criteria,
in order for this to be the most successful. Furthermore, someone has to
grade all the tests by hand, which requires active people with a
considerable knowledge in the subject (can be easy or hard to find,
depending on the subject).
Needed: IO staff (to set up system), excellent writers/test designers,
graders
