This page is an introduction to the d6 roleplaying system used by the Allegiance Battle Group. it is only intended to describe the basics of the d6 roleplaying system; rules for specific situations can be found in the ABG Manual.

Introduction and Purpose
Like any roleplaying game, the d6 system used by the Allegiance Battle Group is used to add an element of "randomness" to gameplay. Rather than having a character who always succeeds or always fails (or having the rolls decided entirely by the [[ABG Mechanics#Game Master]), using a dice-based system allows the ABG to give players a more realtistic and cinematic feeling to their roleplaying.

The d6 System explained
The basic mechanic of the ABG is that a player rolls a certain number of dice to complete a task. If the number they roll is higher than the difficulty number of the task, they succeed.

Difficulty Numbers
Difficulty numbers (or DCs) are assigned by a Game Master during sims. They represent how difficult a task is to complete. The higher the DC is, the more difficult the task. Difficulty numbers are also divided into difficulty levels:

Very Easy: DC 1-5

Easy: DC 6-10

Moderate: DC 11-15

Difficult: DC 16-20

Very Difficult: DC 21-30

Heroic: DC 31 or higher (difficulty levels of Heroic or higher are sometimes described as Heroic +5 at DC 36-40, Heroic +10 at DC 41-45, etc.)

Modifiers
In some situations, modifiers are applied to a character's dice roll. These modifiers can be helpful or harmful to the character's efforts. Generally, a modifier will apply to either the number of dice a character can roll, or to the difficulty which the character must beat. The full list of modifiers is too extensive to cover here; many of them are described in the ABG Manual. Modifiers not covered in the manual are assigned by the Game Master, never by players.

Special Cases
Sometimes, the results of a dice roll can lead to special circumstances. These are triggered by the Wild Die, the first die rolled. The Wild Die is the number displayed furthest to the left when dice are rolled. For example:

The first "3" on this roll is the Wild Die. Depending on what number is rolled on the Wild Die, a character may have one of two things happen: a bonus or a random complication.

A bonus occurs when a 6 is rolled on the Wild Die. When bonuses occur, the Wild Die is displayed in blue. When a bonus occurs, a random number is added to the character's total roll. The amount of the bonus is displayed beside the dice roll.

A random complication, more commonly known as an Rcomp, occurs when a 1 is rolled on the Wild Die. In this case, the Wild Die is displayed in red. Random complications are exactly that - some random event happens during the character's attempt at a task, and can be good or bad. When an Rcomp is triggered, the GM rolls a 100-sided die secretly, and applies the results to the character's attempt.

Examples:

Normal dice roll: `Fiona: 5d6+1 -- 3 3 2 5 4 +1 -- Total: 18

Bonus: `Fiona: 5d6+1 -- 6 5 6 3 4 +1 -- Total: 32 Bonus: 7

Random Complication (Rcomp): `Fiona: 5d6+1 -- 1 3 2 3 1 +1 -- Total: 11 Re-roll: 1

Types of Dice Rolls
There are two main types of dice rolls used in the ABG, known as static rolls and opposed rolls.

Static rolls are when a character rolls their dice against a fixed difficulty number, decided by the Game Master. For example, the character might be attempting to climb a rock face. The Game Master sets the DC at 15, which the player must roll equal to or higher than for their character to succeed.

Opposed rolls are when two or more characters are competing to reach their goals. This is most common in combat situations, where one character is attempting to strike another character, and the second character is attempting to avoid being struck. In this case, each character makes their roll, and whoever rolls higher succeeds. If the rolls are tied, success is given to the defender.

Character Sheets and Dice Codes
Each character in the ABG has a Character Sheet where their stats, equipment and other information needed for sims are recorded. Attributes and skills (explained below) are recorded in one section of the character sheet. Beside each Attribute and Skill is what is known as a dice code. They look like this:

Dodge 5D+1

The dice code represents the number of dice that a character may roll to attempt a given task. The more dice a character possesses, the more likely they are to meet higher DCs. Dice codes work as follows: the number before the "D" is the number of six-sided dice that you roll. The number after the D is a fixed number that you add to your roll, known as a "pip". In the dice code shown above, 5D+1, it means that the player would roll five six-sided dice, add up the total, then add 1 to that number.

When reading dice codes, three pips = one die. If you are granted a bonus to your roll or upgrade a skill, the progression is: +1, +2, +1D, repeating at each D (full die). Thus, if you have a roll of 3D+2 and you get a +1 bonus to your roll, your roll becomes 4D instead of 3D+3.

Attributes and Skills
There are two primary types of stats that are important to the ABG mechanics system. These are known as "attributes" and "skills"

Attributes
Attributes represent a category of abilities. Attributes can be said to measure a person's natural ability in an area, such as someone who is naturally graceful, strong or intelligent.

The six Attributes are Dexterity (covers tasks requiring agility and coordination), Knowledge (covers tasks requiring "book smarts" and reasoning), Mechanical (covers tasks involving operating mechanical equipment, such as piloting), Perception (covers tasks that involve being able to perceive the environment and interact with others), Strength (covers tasks involving raw muscular power), and Technical (covers tasks requiring a certain level of technical skill, such as operating computers, building or repairing equipment and treating injuries).

Skills
Skills represent a character's ability to accomplish a task in a specific area of expertise. Usually, a skill represents some kind of specific training in an area, whether formal or gained through experience. Examples of skills are Dodge (used to evade attacks in combat), Starfighter Piloting (used to operate starfighters), or Lightsaber Repair (used to build and repair lightsabers).

Skills are grouped under the six Attributes. This is where the relationship between natural ability and training becomes easier to see. For example, a character with a high Dexterity moves very fluidly, but may not be a very good fighter - that is, they may not have any training in the Brawling or Martial Arts skills. Likewise, a character might not be very perceptive (with a low Perception score), but very good at talking people into doing what they want (with higher Con or Persuasion scores).

Generally, when attempting a task during a sim, it will be a skill rather than an attribute that a player rolls. Sometimes, however, a Game Master will call for an Attribute roll instead. (Cases that this might happen in are described in the ABG Manual.) The Game Master will tell a player which Attribute or Skill they need to roll, although sometimes this is common sense (Blaster to fire a blaster, Dodge to dodge an attack, Starfighter Piloting to fly an X-Wing, etc.).

If the Game Master asks a player to use a skill they are not trained in (i.e. that isn't listed on their character sheet), they may roll their Attribute dice code instead, with a -1D penalty (the player rolls one less dice than the Attribute dice code). For example, the Game Master asks a player to roll the Blaster Artillery skill. The player looks at their Character Sheet and does not have Blaster Artillery listed. Since Blaster Artillery is a Dexterity Skill, the player may roll their Dexterity, minus one die. If the character's Dexterity is 3D+1, the player would roll 2D+1.

Special Attributes and Skills
Advanced skills are skills that a character may learn as they progress that grant them new abilities or bonuses to existing ones. They require a certain level of ability in other attributes or skills before they can be learned and used. For example, the Quick Draw Advanced Skill allows a character to draw weapons faster than they normally would, but their Dexterity Attribute must be at a certain level before they can learn this Skill.

Force powers are their own categories of Attributes and Skills, and will be described on the ABG Force Use System page.

Fiona: Filled in the Intro and Attributes/Skills sections.

This page is intended to be a reference for members new to the Allegiance Battle Group. Expect page content to be updated over time. Much of the information here is contained in the ABG Manual, but is rephrased for clarity.

ABG Basics
The Allegiance Battle Group is dedicated to d6 roleplaying games. Members create characters who are later played in sims, roleplaying sessions that multiple characters participate in. Because of its roleplaying game nature, the ABG uses dice to moderate the outcome of events during a sim.

The basic reference for each character is their Character Sheet, which details all of the information needed for a character to participate in a sim. Since the ABG can be very character-driven, members are encouraged to come up with a personality and backstory for their character, so that they can interact better with others instead of simply being "numbers on a page".

The dice mechanics of the ABG are explained on the ABG Mechanics page.

Types of Sim
The basic unit of ABG gaming is called a "sim". There are several types of sim, which have different uses.

Standard Sims
Standard sims are the bread and butter of the ABG. They are moderated by a Game Master and have a specific storyline, with a number of objectives for the player characters to complete. Sim rewards (such as character points, learning increments and other rewards as decided by the Game Master running the sim) can be given for standard sims.

Character Sims
Character sims, commonly called charsims, are run so player characters have a chance to interact with each other outside of standard sims. Character sims represent "downtime" between standard sims, the things characters do when they're not on missions. While charsims are not moderated by a Game Master, the characters will still receive some sim rewards; two Character Points and one learning increment per charsim.

Other Sim Types
Upgrade sims are less properly "sims". Upgrade sims are supervised by a Senior Game Master or higher, and are an opportunity for players to spend Character Points to upgrade their character's stats.

Training sims are a type of standard sim where the characters are gathered specifically to train a certain skill. If a character participates in a training sim for a skill they are training, they receive two learning increments, rather than one.

Marathon sims are a special type of standard sim that runs continuously for twelve or more hours. Because of the dedication needed to participate in the full run of a marathon sim, additional awards are often given for completing one, such as ABG Merit Points.

Glossary
Here is a glossary of important terms that are commonly used in the Allegiance Battle Group.

ABG: A common acronym for the Allegiance Battle Group.

Game Master: An ABG official who moderates the storyline of a standard sim. More information is given on the ABG Mechanics page.

Player character: A character controlled by an ABG member ("player"), rather than by a Game Master.

Rebel Squadrons History
Early Life
Fiona Starfall, some said, had been born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She was a daughter of Coruscant, growing up in the higher echelons of society both by birth and by occupation - her mother was a noble of Corulag and later a respected member of the Imperial Diplomatic Corps, and her father was a senior Imperial Navy captain. The couple had Fiona, their only child, much later than the upper class was expected to settle down and raise a family.

From the outset, Fiona was gifted with impressive charisma and an unshakeable will. Although this sometimes made life very difficult for her parents while she was growing up, both of them recognized the potential that their daughter had. Fiona's upbringing was surprisingly carefree, compared to the families that were considered her peers. When the other children were off learning proper manners or preparing musical presentations which their parents could use as political bargaining chips, Fiona was off gallivanting around the Core Systems with her father, who gradually taught her something that would later shape her future: nothing, was more important than principles.

As a thoroughly indoctrinated Imperial child, Fiona's thoughts turned toward a career serving the Empire. Her willpower and hard work allowed her to finish school early and at the top of her class. Seeking a challenge, she turned her eyes toward the uniformed services. Both of her parents wanted her to follow in her mother's footsteps as diplomat, knowing that the combination of her determination and ability to flatter people would have made her an excellent negotiator. However, Fiona had other ideas. On her seventeenth birthday, she entered the Raithal Academy to become an officer in the Imperial Marines, one of the first non-clone stormtroopers the Empire had recruited.

Imperial Service
Raithal taught Fiona many things. She learned how to be a soldier. She learned how to command troops in the field, and about different kind of starships. She even learned to fly TIE fighters at one point, although she only ever flew in sims, never out in combat. The lessons that would shape her future, though, were when she learned how to be an Imperial officer. To her, the Empire really was the bright jewel of the galaxy, upholding freedom and protecting people across every star system. There may have been flaws, but the wrongs were committed by individuals, not by the Empire itself. Ironically, the very idealism and confidence bred into Fiona at Raithal would be what made her turn her back on the Empire.

Four years later, Fiona was wearing the uniform of an Imperial Captain, in charge of the marine company embarked on one of the many Strike Cruisers assigned to patrol the Mid Rim. She spent her days searching for traces of the Rebel Alliance and capturing or killing its members who preyed on innocent Imperial lives. There were times where her conscience bothered her, and she never ordered her company to take more lives than necessary to complete a mission. As far as she was concerned, the Rebels had declared themselves the enemy when they chose to attack the Empire, and there was no reason to let an enemy live unnecessarily.

A New Era
One day, however, everything changed in a flash. Fiona's annual leave was coming up, and she had made plans to meet her parents on Alderaan for a family vacation. Much to her annoyance, her departure from her post was delayed by a day due to an error of paperwork.

It turned out that an error of paperwork would save her life.

Like many others, Fiona was shocked and horrified by the destruction of Alderaan. Her parents had arrived several days before Fiona was scheduled to meet them, and much to her dismay, they had been on the doomed world when the Death Star came into orbit. Worst of all, however, was the Imperial Navy's response: that Alderaan had to be made an example of, and that the people shouldn't grieve for the losses of innocents but celebrate the victory over the Rebellion In Fiona's mind, though, something essential gave way. She had believed for years that the Empire was a good organization that sometimes included bad people, like any organization did; but an order to destroy a planet could only have come from the Emperor himself. if the man controlling the Empire had the corrupt will to order the execution of millions of innocents and the officers of the Imperial military didn't stand against such a cruel and deprived act, then maybe the Empire really was as evil as the Rebels claimed.

Six months later, she resigned her commission as an Imperial officer and retreated to Coruscant. Once there, Fiona was contacted by a childhood friend - or, more accurately, her childhood friend's personal assistant. It turned out the woman had fled Coruscant several years before, around the same time that Fiona had joined the Imperial Marines. Fiona agreed to meet her old playmate on Corulag, her mother's birthplace. Much to Fiona's surprise, the woman was working for Alliance Intelligence.

The friend convinced Fiona to act as an agent in place, passing on juicy bits of gossip from high-society functions back to the Alliance - gossip which, Intelligence found out, had turned out to be more accurate than the bourgeois dilettantes could possibly imagine. Fiona agreed, and for almost a year she passed on small pieces of information to the Alliance. Some of this information turned out to be extremely useful to the Alliance's covert funding streams, which often either relied on or manipulated the large businesses that the Coruscanti aristocrats controlled. Unfortunately, Imperial Intelligence caught a whiff of Fiona's involvement, and the Alliance quickly smuggled her off-world.

Before long, Fiona was back in uniform aboard a starship. This time, however, she was a lieutenant and the leader of a detachment of SpecForce Marines aboard one of the Alliance's blockade runners. For the next several years Fiona was the commander of one of the Alliance's most successful raiding teams, seizing lightly defended Imperial freighters and transporting their contents to Alliance bases all over the galaxy. Fiona participated directly in several key supply raids which helped the Alliance prepare for the Battle of Endor. In the aftermath of the death of the Emperor, Fiona lead several teams of urban guerrillas to help secure her homeworld and ensure a smooth transition to the government of the New Republic.

After a few months, Fiona became restless. She decided to try her hand at a different challenge. The New Republic's fighter corps had been severely diminished after the Battle of Endor, and more pilots were needed to engage the numerous Imperial factions trying to destabilize the newly forming government. Fiona volunteered to be trained as an X-Wing pilot. She carried out her duties well for nearly five years as a member of the Third Fleet, chasing down pirates and the Imperial Remnant.

The Rebel Squadrons
A year ago, Fiona heard the call put out for experienced SpecForce operators. The threat of piracy and desperate assaults from the Imperial Remnant hadn't disappeared, and the New Republic needed its shipborne troopers more than ever. A series of brilliant attacks on key New Republic holdings had made High Command extremely antsy. Sensing an interesting change of pace, Fiona jumped back into the uniform of a Marine. Now, she's taken her expertise to the Rebel Squadrons, hoping for yet another adventure.

From the outset, Fiona was gifted with impressive charisma an unshakeable will.

On her seventeenth birthday, she entered the Raithal Academy to become an officer in the Imperial Marines.
Worst of all, however, was the Imperial Navy's response: that Alderaan had to be made an example of, and that the people shouldn't grieve for the losses of innocents but celebrate the victory over the Rebellion In Fiona’s mind, though, something essential gave way. She had believed for years that the Empire was a good organization that sometimes included bad people, like any organization did – but an order to destroy a planet could only have come from the Emperor himself. if the man controlling the Empire had the corrupt will to order the execution of millions of innocents and the officers of the Imperial military didn’t stand against such a cruel and deprived act, then maybe the Empire really was as evil as the Rebels claimed.

(Intro paragraph will go here.)

From the outset, Fiona was gifted with impressive charisma an unshakeable will.

On her seventeenth birthday, she entered the Raithal Academy to become an officer in the Imperial Marines.

Fiona’s annual leave was coming up, and she had made plans to meet her parents on Alderaan for a family vacation.

Worst of all, however, was the Imperial Navy's response: that Alderaan had to be made an example of, and that the people shouldn't grieve for the losses of innocents but celebrate the victory over the Rebellion In Fiona’s mind, though, something essential gave way.
