== History ==
The Defense Operations Wing, otherwise known as DOW, was created sometime shortly after the formation of the [[Renegade Fleet]] once the game X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was released. At its best, the DOW was composed of three squadrons: [[Red Dragon Squadron]], [[Griffon Squadron]], and [[Jedi Squadron]]. The RDS maintained its existance throughout the entire life of the RgF, and carries on in the VSG to this day. Jedi and Griffon Squadrons came and went as pilot numbers fluctuated.

In 2005, Guardian Wing merged with elements from Defense Operations Wing to form a conglomerate wing which retained the name Guardian. Guardian Wing retained two active squadrons (Dragon & Twilight) and one inactive squadron (Wyvern) and also gained one active (Red Dragon) and two inactive (Jedi & Griffon) squadrons from Defense Operations Wing.

== Role in the Starfighter Corps ==
The DOW was charged with the task of being the last line of defense in withdrawal operations, as well as heavy strike or space superiority. More emphasis was given to heavier craft that could go toe-to-toe with Imperial counterparts, rather than hit and fade operations. As such, the standard starfighter assigned to DOW members was the X-Wing or Y-Wing fighter, later on added the B-Wing. Additionally, the capital ships that composed the strike group portion of the DOW were larger and heavier than may have been found in other units of the RgF.

DOW had numerous leaders over the years. Two long standing leaders were [[Pete Arie]] who lead the fleet through c. late 1998 to 2000, and [[Tech Krill]] who lead the wing in c. 2003.
