At one time, Bar Admiral was the second highest rank in the Rebel Squadrons. It was intended to be a position of promotion for Fleet Admirals who had a proven service record and who deserved special honor.
The current text abbreviation for this rank is BA. The original abbreviation for Bar Admiral was 1BA, ca. 1996-1998. The 1 was an undocumented reference to the term One Bar Admiral. The undocumented plan at that time was to give the Fleet Commander the ability to add new ranks such as Two Bar Admiral and Three Bar Admiral if it was deemed necessary to further reward rank to leaders within the Rebel Squadrons.
Over time, some individual ranks have been removed, Bar Admiral being one of those. This rank has not been used since BA Noble's retirement, ca 1998. He was the only person to obtain this rank, although Super was promoted over this rank to Sector Admiral before his first retirement in late 1997. The ranks of Section Admiral and Bar Admiral have not been attainable since the end of 1997.
