RS-wide merit examples

Example A: SP-based pilot

Pilot Dirk Dundee is a TIE Fighter pilot who's grown tired of the EH and wants to try out the Rebel side for a while. He's used to flying large numbers of missions from the EH Battle Center. He gets LJG from Beginner's Path then dives right into flying.

In the first two weeks he:

  • Flies PBF TIE mission #1 as part of his academy training
  • Flies 8 battles (tours) of TIE missions, totalling 46 missions.
  • Reviews and rates each mission and battle.
  • Takes a few academy courses, as he's used to them from the EH. They include the "core" test, 4 courses relating to SW fictional items, and several courses of TIE Fighter pilot ability (let's say that there are 6 available, and he takes 5).

In traditional RS terms Dirk has only contributed to the PBF by flying the one mission, but he would probably be promoted to 2LT. In the next two weeks he:

  • Flies 5 more battles of TIE missions, totalling 24 missions, and reviews and rates everything he does.
  • Takes 3 more academy courses: two on generic topics, plus the intro to Leadership course (OTS?).
  • Improves his score on the PBF TIE mission and gets top gun. He also writes a narrative.

Dirk would likely still be at 2LT in RS terms. In weeks 5-6 he:

  • Makes a TIE Fighter battle of 4 missions' length. It's quite good, since he has so much experience flying.
  • Flies PBF TIE mission #2.
  • Takes 2 more academy courses, one on HTML, the other a second OTS-type course.
  • Edits the wiki some to add some TIE Fighter-related information, and things about his character.

Dirk is putting himself in position for 1LT but most COs would wait till the end of the PBF mission to promote him. In weeks 7-8, Dirk continues to be quite active:

  • He flies 2 more battles of TIE missions, totalling 11, and reviews and rates as usual.
  • He updates his squadron's website and adds a couple new pages to it.
  • He becomes his squadron's XO and begins trying to recruit members from his old squadron in the EH.
  • He improves his PBF TIE mission #2 score, not getting top gun this time, but adds a mission narrative that receives the MRM.
  • He makes some more small edits to the wiki.
  • He participates in a couple RS-wide competitions, and gets second place in "best Star Wars joke about Jabba the Hutt".

Dirk would most likely be 1LT at the RS's usual maximum rate of one promotion per month, or perhaps he would be Captain if he had a CO who was on top of his or her game. In weeks 9-10, Dirk goes back to basics:

  • He flies 9 battles of TIE missions, totalling 51, with reviews and ratings.
  • He edits the wiki slightly.
  • He participates in one small RS-wide competition and gets third.
  • He completes the last of the TIE Fighter academy courses, completing the hardest testing mission, and earns the top "skill" level for TIE Fighter by doing so.
  • He continues to do a decent job as his squadron's XO.
  • He submits a report on PBF TIE mission #3, along with a narrative.

And so on....

Example B: MP-based pilot

Pilot Freddy McFingers has just joined the RS and gets 2LT via Beginner's Path.

He then does the following:

  • Flies VSG mission #1, gets mission complete.
  • 5-10 record against RSers in XWA 1v1
  • Plays 22 matches in XWA WoW, gets player rating of 0.64, team rating of 0.32

This would generally qualify him for promotion to 1Lt. He then:

  • Flies VSG mission #2, gets mission complete.
  • 2-4 record against RSers in XWA 1v1
  • Plays 14 matches in XWA WoW, gets player rating 0.75, team rating 0.47
  • Flies VSG mission #3, gets mission complete.

In many squadrons, he would then be qualified for Captain; in others, perhaps not.

  • Takes basic XvT mission-making course.
  • Creates XvT MP mission for RSers to fly, for database.
  • Flies mission with 3 other RSers, MC each time.
  • Takes basic and intermediate XWA multiplayer course.
  • Plays 19 matches in XWA WoW, gets player rating 0.84, team rating 0.42
  • Flies VSG mission #4, gets mission complete.

In some squadrons, Freddy would be Major; in many others, he would just now become Captain or remain there from before.
