Original proposal

That's right, RS Dancing! The latest idea from the think tank.

Here's the deal: you can make your own Dance Dance Revolution-style game with the free program Stepmania. So, I propose that we take some Star Wars songs (to begin with), set some steps to them, and have members compete. We can do multiple difficulty levels per song if we need to. If you have a dance pad, you can get the Red Octane universal adapter to connect it to your computer and off you go!

The fictional story behind this? How about: we're part of the RS slicing team and we can only slice certain codes using our feet at the right times? Or, maybe we're part of a travelling entertainment dancing troupe that's also a secret espionage team in our spare time. Maybe the dancing is an ancient ritual that allows us to perform better as soldiers, medics, and officers. The possibilities are endless.

The biggest difficulty is matching the tempo exactly between the song mp3 and Stepmania to get the beats just right. The soundtracks are classically orchestrated and most likely use rubato (tempo changes) to achieve expressive effects. It could be quite difficult to match things up just right. On the other hand, if we forget about needing precise beats, we could just use 32nd notes etc. to make the steps go with the music, rather than with computerized beats.

I'm envisioning a "squadron" of people who are interested in this and are willing to play a new song every month. Like the flight simulators, we could have a "battle board" of long-term efforts (all-time top scores), and a monthly round for which medals etc. are rewarded.

Are y'all with me?! :)

Proof-of-concept

The first thirty seconds or so of "Here They Come" set by Licah to two different difficulty levels.

Instructions for installing:

  1. Download heretheycome.zip (2.5 mb)
  2. If you have not installed StepMania yet, do so now.
  3. Unzip heretheycome.zip into C:\Program Files\StepMania\Songs.
  4. Load StepMania and enter normal single mode. The song will be under the "Rebel Squadrons" mix.
  5. Play on either Easy or Challenge -- the other two are not set up yet. Easy is quite easy, Challenge is quite difficult.
  6. Let me know what you think!

This is a proof-of-concept test, so it does not seek to be complete or elegant. There is no background and the timing may not quite match up exactly, but it is very close.
