Medals

Introduction

From time to time, the RS recognizes particular members for certain types of service, achievements, successes, etc. The recognition is often in the form of medals.

Beginnings

The first medals were developed in the collaborative effort of Greedo 96 and Super in 1997. These first medals formed the foundation of a new club wide system for rewarding the work of the RS membership. Some of the medals had no practical use at the time but were created for future use, such as the Violet Cluster. The evolution of the medal system continues to current times. Although all of the original medals are still in use, the whole medal system has vastly expanded and evolved well beyond the original set up, as each successive generation improves upon the previous. The most recent revision was the work of FA Dave Trebonius-Astoris and ADM Rahj Tharen during their tenures as FC.

General Comments about Medals and medal ranking
Ranking
Each medal category has several levels within it. However, the medal categories themselves are also ranked in the order presented here. Commendation is highest, followed by Unit Commendation, then Honorary, Special Tour of Duty, MP Combat (higher than ITOD only because played against real people directly), TOD Combat, Service and finally the basic Graduation. So examples, a level 1 medal under Commendation is the highest level 1 medal, and a level 1 medal under graduation is the lowest level 1 medal.

Retired Medals
Any RS-Wide medals not mentioned here, or listed as being phased out should still be available for viewing within a segragated and unissuable area, with brief statements about which medals to use instead.

Rules for MP Combat Medals
[See Combat Medals above] 1. The multiplayer medals are not applicable for ongoing events such as ITOD's, ladders or weekly reoccurring competitions.

2. The Citations are awarded to the recepient based on their number of standard gaming hours within the competition. Each group that supports a multiplayer game within an interclub/clan competition shall establish how many minutes each match is worth. In order to determine the standard gaming hours, take standard match length and multiply that by the number of matches played by the individual.

3. With the MP combat medals being based on standardize time of play, the Fleet Commander gives authority to the Medal Officer to make guidelines and have final approval for the number of minutes which a match equals. This should be based on the game in question, and the type of gameplay on that game. Fleet CO's will use the MO's guidelines to create a proposal for each game and gameplay type. The Medal Officer will either approve the proposal, or request more information or adjustments. No medals may be issued for a particular game and gameplay type until the Medal Officer approves the number of minutes applied to each match.

Possible Examples of Standard Match Lengths:

Empire at War 20 min
Battlefront Match 30 min
Battlefront II Conquest Match 30 min
Battlefront II 2-CTF Match 30 min
X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter Match 10 min
X-Wing Alliance Match 10 min

Example of application: If a person plays 10 matches in a week long Battlefront II Conquest competition event, they are assumed to have played five hours and are eligable for the appropriate award medal.

Proposed Changes to Operations Manual: Medals
"In the Rebel Squadrons, you may find yourself being recognized for your efforts with a medal or award. Medals and awards fall into two categories: Fleet and Club. These medals can be viewed on your uniform, which is found in your RS Roster Profile. Only Club medals will show up on your uniform. However, both Club and Fleet medals will show up in the listing of medals which is stored in your RS Roster Profile. For an example, see the profile of former Fleet Commander, ADM Rahj Tharen.

"Any member of the Rebel Squadrons can nominate any member for a Club medal, except when otherwise specified by the medal description.

"The Fleet Commander is responsible to evaluate each Club medal nomination, either directly or through an authorized executive staff member (such as the RS XO or the Medal Officer). This evaluation includes consulting the necessary parties and determining the merit of the nomination. If the nomination is warrented, the medal is awarded by the Fleet Commander or authorized executive staff member. If not warrented, the nomination is rejected. Some high medals may have restrictions as to who may award them. Also, as a body, the High Command may evaluate a nomination, determine its merit and award or reject it.

"Club awards in the Rebel Squadrons are divided into several categories, listed here in importance from least to greatest: Graduation, Service, Combat, Honorary, Unit Commendation and Commendation. Combat Medals are divided into three subcategories: TOD Medals, Multiplayer Medals, Special Tour of Duty Medals. Additionally, each medal is assigned to a level, which is used to establish its ranking within the category and its overall importance. Below, each category and medal is listed in category rank order.

"Fleet Command Staff take care of awarding Fleet medals. They are not categorized in the manner of the Club medals."

In addition, the remainder of that Ops webpage should be updated per the medals in this propsoal.

Fleet Medals Template

- Just a generic list of medals for the fleets since I need to do this for the merger anyway.
- Some medals will have to stay at the fleet level (ABG/AF) but some like the TOD medals could be moved to the RS level.
  • Honorary-type Medal -

Because every fleet will want to have some super-high up award for their fleets.

  • Top Squadron Medal -

For the top squadron of every mission/competition.

  • Super Ace Medal -

For the individual winners of every mission/competition.

  • Tour Champion Medal -

For the individual winner of a tour.

  • Champion Squadron Medal -

For the top squadron of a tour.

  • Best Narrative Medal -

For the best narrative every mission.

  • Graduation Medal -

Every game will have one of these still.

- These seem to be mostly game-specific Combat medals.
- Maybe put them at the RS level, but make different names for each fleet
- e.g. Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross and Air Force cross are equal but there is a different one for each branch.
- Accomplishment, Commendation, and Service can all be awarded as the revised Commendation medals in the purposal.

Using what we have so far, we can make some generalizations about unit medals:

Honorary:
Lvl 6 / Honorary Medal - Denotes honorary membership of that unit.
Commendation:
Lvl 7 / Outstanding service - Awarded only to the most significant members of the unit's history. (e.g. RgF order of the Renegade)
Lvl 5 / Remarkable service (e.g. RgF Medal of Service)
Lvl 4 / Excellent service (e.g. building the missions for a tour?)
Lvl 3 / Great service (e.g. assisting the CS with a variety of matters)
Lvl 2 / Significant service (e.g. RgF Corellian Moon)
Lvl 1 / Notable service (e.g. RgF Pilot of the Week)
Unit Commendation: (Use RS-wide specified in main proposal above)
Combat:
Lvl 4 / Best performance over a year (tour)
Lvl 3 / Best performance over three months
Lvl 2 / Best performance in a month (mission) (e.g. Top Ace)
Lvl 1 / Skilled performance (e.g. IBG Bronze Wings)
Unit Combat:
Lvl 4 / Best performance over a year (tour)
Lvl 3 / Best performance over three months
Lvl 2 / Best performance in a month (mission) (e.g. Top Squad)
   Lvl 1 / Skilled performance
Fiction:
Lvl 4 / Best writing over a year (tour)
Lvl 3 / Best writing over three months
Lvl 2 / Best writing in a month (eg. MRM)
Lvl 1 / Skilled writing (e.g. RgF Red Star?)
Graduation:
Lvl 2 / Master Cadet with Honors
Lvl 1 / Master Cadet (does anyone do this?)
Special:
Lvl(1)/ "Beyond Belief" Ribbon (maybe rename this?)
To members that follow orders when nearly everyone else is breaking them
Lvl(1)/ "Gimpy" Award or Violet Cluster
To members that are severely injured but continue fighting anyways.
Lvl(1)/ Broken Bottle Award (from AF)
To members who bend or break rules in a unique way but are still successful.

Items to consider:

  • How much of this could be merged with the RS-wide medals?
  • How can units such as ABG, AF, etc. incorporate these?
  • How can we mold these to fit all RS units?
