Proposal summary

It's confusing to new members to have multiple instructors if they join with more than one game, which almost everyone does. Therefore, they should be assigned a primary instructor who is their go-to person for ANY question about the RS. This person should know who to go to, in turn, with any question that they don't know how to answer, like "How do I install x mission for y game?"

The goal of this proposal is to eliminate new member confusion as much as possible and let them make connections to someone right at the beginning.

Duties

Instructors

  • Email the new member as soon as you see that they have joined. If possible, try always to include a personalized message, especially if they have done anything in the Beginner's Path by the time you reach them (if so, congratulate them and let them know you can help them with the rest!). Give them all of your contact information (that you're comfortable sharing), such as your AIM, MSN, IRC name, etc.
  • Answer any questions that the new member has.
  • Respond to every email that the new member sends you, unless all it says is "Thanks for your help!"

Supervisor

This person to be named, perhaps by the FC? It would make sense that this role is performed by the RS Training Officer, but we may not have one of those right now.

  • Appoint and dismiss instructors
  • Recommend instructors for promotion
  • Report to the FC, or any executive he delegates it to

Requirements

Instructors

The primary instructors should meet the following requirements:

  • At least the rank of Captain
  • Checks and can respond to email at least once every 24 hours
  • Friendly and patient when dealing with confused, lost newbies trying to understand our complex system
  • Willing to work with people from various fleets to solve game-specific questions

Benefits for the instructors fulfilling this duty should include:

  • Consideration for promotion every two months (for Colonel and below), with strong recommendation for promotion if they have been doing a good job
  • Recognition in club-wide emails for their service
  • A chance to help out the RS in a unique way that deeply benefits the club itself

High Command

A more formal version of this proposal needs to be drafted so that HC can vote on a very specific proposal. This will be done below.

Proposal

To High Command: "PRIMARY INSTRUCTORS" PROPOSAL

This proposal is intended to ease the joining process for new members by providing them with one specific person, instead of possibly many people, for them to contact with any questions regarding the join process and the RS.

Step 1 (immediately upon approval of proposal)

  • A RS-wide email will be sent informing the membership of the change, and asking all who would like to be an instructor to step forward. Interested applicants should apply to (person needed here to oversee applicants). Applicants will be reviewed and accepted or denied. The number of instructors should be from 1-12 people, although it is preferable that are at least four or so instructors due to workload. More than 12 would be unnecessary unless joining increases.
  • A Yahoo!group will be set up for the instructors so that they can easily discuss with each other any issues or problems that come up with their work.
  • The instructors will be trained as much as necessary so that they are ready to perform their duties.
  • Support for the system will be coded by the IO staff: Snap and Licah.

Step 2 (when instructors have been trained, preferably approx. 2 weeks after approval of proposal)

  • The following will be added to the welcome email: "Your primary instructor is (rank instructor name). His/her [note: dynamically generated from "Gender" part of profile] email address is (email address). If you have any questions about the Rebel Squadrons, this is the person you should contact. He/she is willing to assist you in whatever way he/she can."
  • The welcome email reply-to address will be the instructor's email address instead of Licah's (who has been answering cadets' questions for the last year or so).

Step 3 (1 and 2 months after Step 2, and as necessary)

  • The entire system will be reviewed to make sure things are running well: the supervisor, the instructors, and the effectiveness of the system itself, as well as any changes that might improve it.
